2 min readSri Lankan mystery spinner of his time, who gave international cricket a new delivery called the carrom ball, spinner Ajantha Mendis at age 34 has retired from all forms of cricket.
When he initially came to international cricket, none of the batsmen could pick him up resulting in a lots of wickets for him, which saw him to be the fastest bowler to 50 wickets in odi’s in 19 matches, which still is a record & also he hold the record of getting 6 wickets in a t20 match twice, which has never been achieved by any other bowler till today. It happened in the World cup T20 in 2012 against Zimbabwe first & then Australia.
Slowly, batsmen started picking him up & his market value diminished in international cricket. Two bowlers who perfected the same carrom ball with a bit of a twist are the current bowlers, India’s Ashwin & Sunil Narine from West Indies.
Ajantha Mendis by starting with the carrom ball in international cricket will always be remembered.
